Current tsunami warning systems use seismic sensors to detect earthquakes. Not all earthquakes generate a tsunami, but a network of tide gauges that detect the arrival of the wave. It will take some time to evacuate the affected people. In an article published in the journal Physics of Fluidsresearchers Cardiff University A new approach has been developed in Wales to determine tsunami risk once an earthquake is detected.

The researchers used hydrophones, underwater microphones that have been placed in the Pacific Ocean by the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO). Typically, they are used to detect nuclear explosions.

AI for analyzing sound waves

Sound waves generated by 200 earthquakes were analyzed by machine learning algorithms to determine their acoustic signature. Using this data, the AI was able to locate the epicenter, classify the type and size of the landslide, calculate width and length, vertical velocity and duration. This helps in determining the size of the tsunami and reduces the risk of false warnings. ” Tectonic events with stronger vertical slip than horizontal slip are more likely to raise or lower the water column. “said Bernab Gómez Perez, one of the authors of the article.

This early warning model will be used alongside the traditional warning system and will be integrated into the software that will be installed at warning centers later this year.
