Title: President Zelensky Holds Talks in Greece, Denmark and the Netherlands to Support Ukraine
President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine recently embarked on a diplomatic visit to Greece, Denmark, and the Netherlands, aiming to garner support for his country amidst escalating tensions with Russia. During his trip, President Zelensky engaged in crucial discussions and expressed his gratitude for the assistance extended by Greece, Denmark, and the Netherlands.
In Greece, President Zelensky had productive meetings with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and President Katerina Sakellaropoulou. Additionally, he participated in an informal dinner alongside officials from nine Balkan nations, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and European Council head Charles Michel. This dinner served as a platform to discuss the future of the Western Balkans region in terms of its integration into the European Union.
Denmark and the Netherlands reiterated their support for Ukraine during President Zelensky’s visit. Denmark made an important announcement, stating their intention to send F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine, with the handover potentially taking place around the New Year. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen highlighted the commitment of her country to stand by Ukraine during this critical time.
Meanwhile, Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte confirmed the transfer of F-16 aircraft to Ukraine, solidifying the Netherlands’ position as a dedicated ally to Ukraine. The timing of this transfer hinges upon the readiness of Ukrainian crews and infrastructure. It is worth noting that the United States had ruled out providing F-16s to Ukraine, citing concerns about escalating tensions with Russia.
These developments come as a culmination of efforts initiated in May by UK Chancellor Rishi Sunak and PM Rutte, who pledged to build an international coalition to provide Ukraine with necessary fighter jets.
During his tour, President Zelensky took the opportunity to express his gratitude towards Danish lawmakers for their unwavering support in resisting Russia’s invasion. While Greece has provided crucial military assistance to Ukraine, it has refrained from succumbing to pressure to supply an air defense missile system.
As Ukraine continues to face ongoing security challenges, President Zelensky’s diplomatic visits highlight the international support being mobilized to aid the country. The commitment from Greece, Denmark, and the Netherlands to equip Ukraine with F-16 fighter jets reflects a collective effort to bolster Ukraine’s defense capabilities and safeguard its sovereignty.
