Russia on Tuesday accused the United States, Australia and the United Kingdom of orchestrating “years of confrontation” in Asia by launching their alliance over nuclear submarines, dubbed the Okus. “The Anglo-Saxon world is building conglomerate structures like AUKUS, pushing NATO’s infrastructure in Asia, seriously betting on long years of confrontation,” said the Russian Foreign Minister in a speech in Moscow. Foreign Affairs, Sergey Lavrov.
For its part, the Kremlin expressed concern about the dangers of nuclear proliferation posed by the agreement between Washington, London and Canberra. “In any case, many questions arise regarding the issue of non-proliferation,” said Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov. “We need very special transparency,” he added during a press conference.

A few minutes earlier, the International Atomic Energy Agency had also warned of the proliferation risks posed by the agreement to build a new generation of nuclear submarines in Australia. “Ultimately, the agency must ensure that no risk of proliferation emerges from this project,” UN agency director general Rafael Grossi said in a press release. He stressed that “the legal obligations of the two parties and non-proliferation issues are of paramount importance.”
